Old parquet floors

Very common in the 18th century, herringbone or Hungarian point parquet floors gave way to herringbone parquet floors in the 19th century.

The characteristics of old parquet floors

These panels were generally made of oak and more rarely of walnut or a mixture of the two species. Parquet floors with geometric patterns or marquetry were installed in prestigious residences. The Italian parquet floors in marquetry used fruit woods (walnut, cherry, cherry, maple, sycamore, lime) before being mounted on a softwood core.

Old solid floors

Different woods made up the old wide plank floors :

Oak (most common, up to about 30cm wide)
Elm (large widths up to 50 cm)
Linden
Larch
Fir
Walnut

The unit of measurement for the thickness of ancient floors was the inch. The boards were 27 mm (rough sawn) then 22 to 24 mm once planed by hand. Currently, a thickness of 20 mm is generally found due to the mechanical planing of both sides.
